About COVID-19 in BC

Myself pictured along with BC Premier John Horgan and my local MLA Nicholas Simons (Powell River-Sunshine Coast) at the 2019 BC NDP Convention (Nov 25, 2019)

My name is Jason Lewis- I'm a first year science student at UBC. As part of my life plan to go into computer science, I created COVID19inBC.ca because I wanted a place to view all the COVID-19 case information in British Columbia. My goal of COVID-19 in BC is to provide users with accurate and fast British Columbia COVID-19 data represented in different ways.

Everyday I update this website with information from the daily update provided by Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix. Information is usually updated within 15 minutes of it being released. I also email everybody on the email list the current case count, and a link to view the current graphs.

I am continuing to build on this project and will add more features to ensure COVID-19 data in British Columbia is easily and readily accessible. You can be alerted with daily updates of case count and website features by registering on the email list, which you can find on the home page.

I would like to thank all the health professionals along with every front line workers: foodbank workers, community services, child care workers, transit operators, teachers, EA's, grocery store workers, etc., along with everyone volunteering to help people through this crisis. I would also like to thank the leadership by Dr. Henry in keeping the people of British Columbia safe. This is one of the ways I'm trying to help. This is a solo project, and no government or other organization is involved. I also don't make any money off of this project.

This project is possible thanks to three vital open source projects: Chart.js (renders the case graphs), patternomaly (for colourblind mode), and jQRangeSlider (date slider). Thank you to the developers of these projects for allowing people to use your code for free. All of these projects are published under the MIT License.

It is important to recognize the land which we are on. I live on the Sunshine Coast, near Gibsons. COVID19inBC.ca was developed and is administered on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Nation. In addition, I worked on this project while I lived at UBC, so this website was also developed on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam) People.
